Inspired by a traditional Kenyan coffee drink enjoyed by traveling spice traders along the east African coast, the center of ancient spice trade. Traders stopped in Kenya to relax and enjoy flavored coffe mixed with spices. Add milk to bring out the spice notes of cardamom, cinnamon, and clove.

Kahawa 1893^® is a specialty coffee company founded and run by Margaret Nyamumbo, a third-generation coffee farmer from Kenya. Kahawa means “coffee” in Swahili, the primary language spoken there.

Growing up on her grandfather’s coffee farm in Kenya, Margaret observed that women provided 90% of labor on the farm but they were not always adequately compensated. She founded Kahawa 1893^® to help empower the women who make the coffee trade possible and share exquisite African coffee with the world.
